I grew up in Lakewood, Colorado. I studied violin and dance, and I earned my International Baccalaureate diploma from Lakewood High School. I went on to pursue my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics at CU Boulder, which I completed With Distinction (3.8 GPA) with a minor in Classics (Latin Language and Literature) and the Certificate in Cognitive Science. I was on the Dean’s List for all of my sophomore, junior, and senior years. Throughout high school and college, I studied French and am still conversationally proficient. I am also learning German!
I began working as a Medical Records Annotator for the THYME project in 2013, which is a machine learning project funded by the National Institutes of Health that aims to both help machines read like humans and assist in clinical oncology research. The project involves creating AI-readable timelines and co-reference chains in a 1-to-1 linking system using complicated and ever-changing guidelines. I have also worked on other media, including discussion forums, news articles, and proxy notes, through the RED project.
In college, I was the Humanities Editor of the 2013-14 CU Boulder Honors Journal, a collection of outstanding undergraduate work. My duties involved soliciting and selecting pieces for the journal, proofreading multiple essays and theses across multiple disciplines, and contributing to the journal’s design. I also copy edited a Linguistics PhD thesis concerning Chinese bidirectional constructions and proofread a linguistics fieldwork book review that was published in the November 2016 Linguist List journal (note: additional editing was performed by the publication reviewer before publishing).
Nowadays, I am a member of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES) and the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE), and I recently earned the Poynter ACES Certificate in Editing as well as the Hubspot InBound Marketing Certificate. My recent editing work includes a mailing letter for a real estate company, a set of FAQs and instructions for a sublingual stress relief spray, informational packets for the children’s dance studio where I teach part-time, and a roughly month-long contract with CrocsTM Footwear through The Creative Group where I proofread sales presentations and hundreds of lines of product copy as well as wrote descriptive copy for hundreds of accessory products and a large batch of shoe search engine descriptions. I have also been working with the Integer Group, where I have been providing editorial assistance for print and digital deliverables for brands like Starbucks, Mars Wrigley, and Procter & Gamble. I am always looking for new challenges and projects, so I would love to see what you have for me!
“Dana was an incredible asset for our team. Highly skilled in the art of linguistics, she exceeded our expectations and was able to quickly power through an immense amount of copy that needed to be edited for grammar and style. Additionally, during her short contract, she wrote hundreds of SEO copy blurbs and a long list of consumer-facing product copy, too. She is incredibly intelligent with laser focus on the smallest details. She was a pleasure to work with, and we will definitely bring her back in the future.”
-Sean Carney, Associate Creative Director, CrocsTM Footwear
“I had the opportunity to ask Dana to edit and proofread a review paper I sent for publication. She was always available for questions and was constructive with her comments on my writing. Her training in linguistics definitely helps her make those kinds of comments. I am pleased with her work and would recommend her to anyone who needs a sharp eye to look at their writing.”
-Jesus Villalpando, Linguistics PhD Student
